Governor Murphy: Walk Your Talk on Climate

EmpowerNJ is organizing GOV MURPHY: WALK YOUR TALK ON CLIMATE, a walk for clean air and climate justice,  August 16 – 20, 2022.

Over the course of five days, we will walk from Newark to Elizabeth, to Woodbridge, to Old Bridge, and finally to Red Bank just across the river from Governor Murphy’s home. The Walk and Caravan will link the seven proposed fossil fuel projects in New Jersey, which local groups have been fighting for years.

These projects are our targets for protest because they would be massive polluters, increasing New Jersey’s greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 38 percent, and putting people’s health and lives at risk! With four of the seven projects facing final permit decisions in the coming months, our actions will dramatize to Governor Murphy that he must use his powers to put a stop to all of these dirty, dangerous and unnecessary projects NOW!

We will engage in daily community meetings, rallies, vigils, and other actions at appropriate locations determined by local groups. These events will bring attention to and amplify the determined struggles being waged throughout the state for clean air, healthy communities, and a rapid shift away from fossil fuels to jobs-creating clean renewable energy solutions.

SCHEDULE OF COMMUNITY EVENTS ALONG THE WALK

August 16, Newark, 10:00 am: Walk and canvass through the Ironbound community to highlight the grassroots and environmental justice fight to stop PVSC power plant and to gather comments from local residents on the proposed rules and regulations to operationalize NJ’s Environmental Justice Law. We’ll walk 1.7 miles as part of a street canvass and arrive at the rally to stop the NJ TRANSIT power plant at 12pm.

August 16, Newark, 12:00 noon: Rally to stop the NJ TRANSIT power plant!

August 17, Woodbridge, 6:30 pm: Rally stop the CPV Power Plant! Together we’ll call on Governor Murphy to stop the proposed CPV power plant, which would be one of the biggest climate polluters in the state.

August 18, Woodbridge, 10:30 am: Rally to stop the highway expansions! We’ll call on Governor Murphy to reject the massive highway expansion project that would result in millions of additional car trips annually and more air pollution spewing into already overburdened communities in Newark, Bayonne, Jersey City and Hoboken.

August 18, Virtual, 6:00 pm: Educational forum on the Williams REAE Pipeline Expansion Project. Learn more about this dirty, dangerous and unnecessary project and the actions we can all take to stop it.

August 20, Red Bank, 12:00 noon: Rally Finale to end the week, highlighting the dangers of all seven fossil fuel projects and calling on the Governor to fulfill his climate commitments by stopping all new fossil fuel expansion projects!
