Climate March to Cross Keystone Pipeline Route
In response to recent oil spills in Arkansas and Minnesota, organizers of the Great March for Climate Action today announced that the March of 1,000 “climate patriots” will travel through Nebraska, crossing the proposed route of the Keystone Pipeline. The March will leave the West Coast on March 1, 2014 and arrive in Washington, DC in November, 2014. It will be the largest coast-to-coast march in US history.
“The big picture is the damage that oil and other fossil fuels do to our climate, but the little picture – an oil spill fouling your water, your neighborhood, even your backyard – is also part of the problem,” said Ed Fallon, the talk-show host and former Iowa lawmaker who helped launch the March last month.
“We have decided to route the March through Nebraska, hoping to point to where the Keystone Pipeline would’ve been built if President Obama makes the right decision. If he makes the wrong decision and authorizes construction of the pipeline, our focus will shift from praise to protest,” concluded Fallon.
In its first month of organizing, Fallon and other March volunteers raised $40,000 and set-up the structure and logistics to continue to move planning forward.
