One Month Countdown to History Making March
On Saturday, March 1 the Great March for Climate Action begins its 3,000-mile journey across America with a rally in the shadow of an oil refinery followed by a 17.5-mile march through the streets of Los Angeles. The first day of the March is being organized in conjunction with SoCal Climate Action Coalition 350.
Following an 8:30 a.m. PST press briefing and a 9:00 rally at the Wilmington Waterfront Park on Los Angeles Harbor, thousands are expected to march to downtown Los Angeles. On March 2, hundreds will continue the March over the course of the next eight months, to arrive in Washington, D.C. with the message that we need immediate action to solve the climate crisis.
Over 225 people have signed-up to march all or part of the way. Many marchers have spent more than six months preparing themselves, both physically and psychologically, for the rigors of marching day after day and camping in challenging conditions for 246 nights.
The March is scheduled to reach Phoenix on April 8, Denver on June 17, Des Moines on August 11, Chicago on September 6, Pittsburgh on October 14, and Washington, D.C. on November 1. Marchers will walk an average of 14-15 miles per day and camp in a mobile green village which will demonstrate a range of sustainable technologies, including a mobile wind generator donated by Anemometry Specialists, parabolic solar cookers donated by Cantinawest, composting toilets provided by Eco Commode, equipment sponsored by Sun Harvest Solar & Electrical, and a truck powered by vegetable oil.
“In addition to our marchers, who are working hard to help pull this together, we’re thrilled that businesses and organizations are stepping forward,” said Ed Fallon, founder and director of the Climate March and a former Iowa state lawmaker. “With so many cutting-edge partners coming on board, the March will be a traveling exposition of renewable energy and sustainable technologies. We’ll let people see firsthand that addressing the climate crisis is not a technical problem but a personal and collective one. It’s a wake-up call for all of us to step forward and do our part.”
