Marchers for Climate Change Have a New Dream for America

Article appeared in the print version of the Gallup Independent, May 8, 2014 By Vida Volkert Staff writer eastnavajo@gallupindependent.com ZUNI — The last of the marchers appeared on the horizon, defying the odds. The young man was not only walking with crutches — he was barefoot. His female companion kept his pace and communicated with him with her hands. She could not talk. They were sunburned, sweaty and tired, yet they were smiling and cheering each other as they walked along New Mexico Highway 53. Continue reading →

Music on the March

[By: Luke Davis] One of the biggest blessings on this trip, in my opinion, is the large number of wonderful musicians that happen to be marching. Without this necessary group of creative, artistic people, I am convinced that this march would have a significantly smaller impact. Music plays a fundamental role in any movement, and it plays the role of defining and giving identity to a movement which would otherwise appear as dull or ineffective. Music has so far been used on this march to Continue reading →

Kelsey Erickson, Carlisle, Massachusetts – Kelsey spent most of her childhood exploring the woods.  She first became involved with environmental activism in high school and became even more active in college.  It was through activism that she met her best friend, Chris Dennis, whose passion lay in the usage of film-making as a tool for change.  Chris tragically died five days before their graduation.  Thus, Kelsey is dedicating her march to Chris and is planning to produce a documentary of the march in his memory. Reject and Protect Reflections

[By Jerry Stewart] Before March 1st, if you would have asked me what I thought the march would be, I would have described a scene similar to that which unfolded over the last five days. While an alliance of farmers, ranchers, and indigenous community members from along the Keystone XL pipeline route, called the Cowboy-Indian Alliance, gathered in DC to call on Obama to reject the pipeline, the march organized five days of action to express our collective solidarity. On the first day, we made Continue reading →

Questions

[By: Ken Snyder] Two months into our epic journey and it has been clear (from nearly day 1) that “humility” would be a dominant theme for me, as well as many others in our group.  From the micro-level, daily systems dynamics of our mobile community, to our macro-level stated mission of inspiring action to halt and reverse the progression and address the consequences of the climate crisis brings questions. Questions about our own personal values and our capacity to practice, apply, and realize them abound. Continue reading →

Medical March Madness

[By: Kimberly Foley; Des Moines, IA] We’ve completed the first million steps, only six million more to go. From strep throat to pneumonia, blisters to back aches, it is a learning process that we’re slowly getting better at. Our spirit walkers (marchers walking every step from LA to DC) and all those making this March possible, have gone through a lot. Steve Martin (Kentucky) is one of our older spirit walkers. He has not missed a step since starting the march in LA on March Continue reading →

Marcher in the Home

Who to contact about hosting a Marcher: • Iowa: Sarah Spain, sarah@climatemarch.org This page is to answer questions for people who are hosting and/or considering hosting a marcher in their home. What is Marcher in the Home? Anita’s Response Anita: Some people are wondering what happens on nights when we don’t camp.
